'My husband and I have always had dogs, even before our children, but when our beloved chocolate Labrador passed away we couldn't imagine getting another dog. Obviously, both our children were heart broken and began to miss having a dog around. I was adamant that I was in no hurry and was going to rescue.
I had been following the fabulous work that WAHF do on Instagram and began looking at dogs that were available for adoption. I was nervous that adopting a dog that I had only seen on the internet and never met was maybe not the best route when I have children to consider too. However, my kids are dog savvy and been around dogs their whole lives, so I reassured myself that this was a positive step to consider adopting from WAHF.
Needless, to say as soon as I saw the photo of Lex (was Jasper) I knew I had to see if he was available and to my surprise he was. The whole process was very straightforward and efficient. All my questions and concerns were answered and the support and follow up has been amazing.
Lex arrived on a Friday night by courier to our door. He actually didn't smell too bad, but needless to say he was nervous and quiet. We had set up a crate and the first night he slept happily in there with the door open and me on the sofa. The second night he did the same and the third night slept with me on the sofa. It took him about 4 days to relax with thanks to my friends Bearded Collie, who he adores.
Now 8 months on, we wouldn't be without him. He is loving, affectionate, playful, cheeky and a lot of fun. He still isn't a fan of water or men with hats on, but he loves the kids and they love him. It has been a truly great experience and I am sure we have been so lucky that he has settled in so well. Obviously, there are things we are still working on. His recall is generally good but can be easily distracted! He also barks at men he doesn't know too. However there is no doubt that he is totally part of the family and has recently enjoyed his first holiday away with us!
If you are reading this and considering adopting, do it! It is so rewarding and if I could do it again I would!'
