Many of you have followed the closure of the shelter we support in Lakatamia Cyprus which began with the news that the local municipality are reclaiming the land and gave us two weeks to remove all the dogs or they would be taken to a local kill shelter.
Well Eve and Nadine have had the most hectic and exhausting three weeks - but we are delighted to announce that an incredible 42 dogs now have adoptive or foster homes, about five dogs are in private kennels and some are staying with our volunteers until a new location is found (poor Constantina now has 31 dogs in her home!).
We are currently in the process of getting our dogs to their new families - booking flights, arranging vaccines, passports and neutering. DID YOU KNOW that including the passport, vaccines and transport fees, it costs a whopping €22,000 to rehome these 42 dogs.
WE NEED MORE FUNDS... We have raised €5995 via our online fundraiser and €8675 in donations from the people adopting our 42 dogs - this leaves us with a shortfall of €7330! We are nowhere near our target, which puts us under serious threat of not having the money to transport these dogs to their new homes.
Please know that ever single penny we get from you goes only on the transportation of these dogs - nothing else. With the average cost of transporting a dog out of Cyprus to their new home costing €500, the money we have raised so far simply does not stretch far enough - it only fully funds 10 dogs. With 42 dogs to fly out of Cyprus, we are struggling to feasibly support all these journeys. As a charity, our aim is to support projects like this, but as we established just a month ago we are yet to gain financial support or even registered charity status, so you can probably understand the pressure we are under at the moment. Any donations however small are most greatly received, and trust us, as cliché as it is, every little really does help!
The shelter & dogs
With regard to the shelter - we are clinging on for extra time and exploring every single potential opportunity in order to relocate. We still have eight dogs desperately needing a home - they are Flake, Maxima, Ice, Holly, Omar, Bruto, Sky and Barney.
With regard to the lucky dogs that have made it to their new home, we have Lucas, Willow and Adriano now with their new families in the UK. Our next dogs to go home are Sebastian, Ellie and Julan on the 29th April, then we have Violet and Teresa arriving in the UK on 6th May. We have people adopting from Germany, France, UK, Sweden, Holland, Finland and some dogs will remain in Cyprus, but now in the safety of a home. The latest list of dogs, fees, travel dates etc is below.
We honestly cannot thank you all enough for the incredible support you have shown through the means of networking, donating, fostering and adopting. Everyone has worked together and our story has been spread to an audience of thousands, but we can’t give up just yet. We might have been given a breather, but by no means are our dogs safe yet, so please keep sharing, as your support is the reason all these adoptions have been facilitated. You’re all amazing and we really couldn't be more grateful.
