Two weeks ago today we announced the news that 46 dogs in our Lakatamia shelter in Cyprus would be taken to a municipal pound (meaning almost certain death) if we did not find them homes urgently. This is because the local municipality want the land that the shelter sits upon returned to their ownership.
So we rallied our troops and shared this sad news across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter… you have all been amazing – sharing, caring, donating, adopting and fostering. In just two weeks you have raised for us over 5000€ and found homes or fosterers for 38 dogs... YES THIRTY-EIGHT !… thank you enormously for supporting us. Many of you have asked about the status of the dogs still needing homes, the shelter and what will happen next. I hope to answer these questions here…
Update on dogs
I thought the easiest way to share news with you about our dogs is to let you know who has been adopted, who has been fostered, in which country each dog will now live and the amounts donated by each adopter, plus the contribution from Wild at Heart Foundation (as taken from the 5000€ fundraiser). This table (at the end of this article) provides that information for those that are interested. In addition, seven dogs have been adopted or fostered in Cyprus and the wonderful K9-Angels have very kindly offered to care for three of our dogs in their UK shelter. We still have six dogs with no home!
Update on the shelter
We have had the shelter in Lakatamia Cyprus since December 2012 and it has been successfully run by four amazing women who all give their time, affection and love to these poor dogs for free. They fund the provision of food and medication through donations and their own money. The conditions at the shelter are very basic but significantly better than the alternative - which is almost certain death in a municipal pound.
Since the announcement to reclaim the land from the municipality, we have worked with our Cypriot volunteers to find a new piece of land to relocate the dogs. A couple of options for new pieces land have been explored and fallen through. We have also tried to liaise with local shelters where we have relationships – however, we have had no concrete next steps from them. At this point we have no new premises, but we will continue to search for a new piece of land on which to build our new shelter.
What will happen to the remaining dogs?
We have six dogs needing homes – SKY, HOLLY, MAXIMA, AZURA, BRUTO, ICE – and I am sad to announce to you that in the time we have been spent raising awareness of this crisis, a further eight dogs have been brought to the shelter (which will be added to our website).
The shelter stills stands and we have not yet been moved on by the municipality – mainly because we have been able to demonstrate that we have found homes for most of the dogs and that we need two or three weeks to arrange transport. WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN A BREATHER… but they could come knocking any day now and change their minds. If they do, then the wonderful volunteers in Cyprus will simply take all these dogs to their own homes – already one of our volunteers has twenty-three foster dogs in her home. So clearly this is not a long term option.
Our strategy is three-fold:
- Find a piece of land for our new shelter
- Rehome the remaining 14 dogs
- Raise more money to fund the transport for rehoming these dogs
On point 1, Eve and I will be going out to Cyprus in three week’s time to support the effort to find and secure a new piece of land.
On point 2, please continue to share the news on these dogs that need a home and let’s find these last 14 loving families.
On point 3, as you can see 5000€ doesn't stretch far… it costs 545€ for each dog to receive it’s vaccines, passport, health check and flight costs… 5000€ pays for just 10 dogs! Thankfully our adopters have also generously donated funds which has meant we have been able to rehomed 20 or so dogs with the funds already raised. But even now we have a shortfall of around 2500€, plus the money we require for the remaining dogs to be rehomed.
We have decided therefore to increase our fundraiser to 10,000€
Please please help us by donating and sharing so that we can reach our new target.
Do get in contact with us if you have questions, ideas or can help in any other ways. We love you all for everything you have already done x x x
