Cassie is a gorgeous little dog who has spent much of her life in a shelter in Bosnia. Neglected and overlooked, Cassie has had hardly any positive experiences with humans and she therefore has a nervous disposition. She is currently in foster care with Eve, our Rehoming Manager, where she is being assessed and introduced into a loving lifestyle. Cassie is pretty small in size, weighing probably around 10-12kg. She is very skinny so she still needs to gain some weight but she also really enjoys her food so we don't see that being too difficult.
Cassie has previously lived with other dogs so has experienced proper socialisation. We believe that another dog would be key in helping her overcome her nerves and integrate into a new home. The other dog would need to be calm, gentle and patient, as Cassie is very submissive and doesn't like to be approached by hyperactive, playful dogs. She is is no way aggressive, but very fearful. She is also the same with children. As children are naturally more animated and high pitched although they don't mean to they startle Cassie. We therefore won't be rehoming Cassie to a home with a young family as we don't want her to feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed.
Cassie loves being outside so we are looking for a home in the countryside with a secure garden. Although it is possible to walk her in a city, she become very skittish when she hears unfamiliar noises or is approached by crowds of people. When she is walked in a nice open space though she is much more at ease and walks very well on the lead. She enjoys being outside so much that she often doesn't want to come home.
Cassie takes a while to bond with new people. She has a preference for women, but can learn to build trust with men. Eve's boyfriend has been taking a slow and gentle approach to winning Cassie over and she is now very accepting of him. Whoever offers a home to Cassie needs to have patience and be consistent. It would be beneficial to have some experience with a nervous rescue dog, but the key to helping Cassie make progress will be lots of patience.
