NADINE'S PROJECT VISIT TO LESVOS, UPDATE:
Sadly today we met with tragedy. There is a women who we support on Lesvos. She is one if the really good ones - practical, caring, organised, collaborative, efficient, with a heart of gold – all the things we look for in the projects and people we support. She has helped neuter and rehome many, many dogs over the years. We met her today and found out that her partner died in a tragic accident just three weeks ago. This is the man she spent twelve years with, she shared her life with, her hopes and dreams. Together they recently built a shelter – kennels, secure fencing, gates and roofs – a place to keep the dogs they rescued safe from harm and cared for until they reach their new adopters.
Everything has been taken from her in the blink of an eye. Her partner, her hopes and the plans they had for the dogs they rescue. All of this has been exacerbated by the devastating economic situation here in Lesvos. Not only has the island been hit by the Greek financial crisis, but their tourism economy has plummeted to catastrophic levels because of the migrant influx. This has impacted on every single person we have met, everyone. This situation, of course, impacts on our friend here. We need to help her, and quickly.
She currently has ten dogs in her care. Five of them need transport paid to the UK, and either fosters or ideally adopters. We need at least £2500 for the transport to get these five dogs to the UK. We also need to find them permanent homes. They are the sweetest dogs, they really are.
Please, please if you can help, donate now and mark your donation LESVOS-SHELTER
Below are some photos of me and Paul meeting the dogs that need homes, there are four in these pics:
Freddie – the blond large Labrador-cross. Two years old, he is an absolute darling. Neutered, great with other dogs, loves to play, but is also a gentle boy. He was found being bullied by other street dogs. About 28kg and approx. 90cm tall (floor to head).
Wilson – grey adult pointer. Three years old, Wilson is the sweetest boy. Very affectionate, easy going and loves lounging around. Sadly he was run over and his front left leg has never quite recovered due to nerve damage, but he plays as good as any other dog and he hasn’t let me down. He is 22kg and 60cm tall.
Luna – grey pointer puppy. What an utter darling, little Luna. Found in an absolute state in a local chapel, this sweet little thing is a bundle of joy. She is just three months old and will be a small to medium sized dog.
Sofia – white with tan speckles spaniel/setter cross. Two to three years old. Sweet sweet Sofia. All she wants is a cuddle, she is the most affectionate little thing. Soft and gentle and adores people. She is a small medium dog about 55cm tall.
