Not all the passengers herded through our airports are people. Behind the scenes, a vast army of animals are also on the move – from pooches to pythons, moggies to monkeys and shoals of fish.
Many of them will pass through the Heathrow Animal Reception Centre, and if you are adopting a rescue dog from the Wild at Heart Foundation it may be that your dog will travel to the UK via Heathrow. Please note not all of our dogs travel this way, but for those that do here are some tips for you when picking up your dog from Heathrow's Animal Reception Centre.
What you need to bring
Make sure you know the airline, flight number and have been confirmed as the 'person named on their documents' to pick up the dog. You should bring some photo identification (passport or driving license) and something with your address (e.g. a bill). It may also be useful to bring a pair of scissors (to open the crate cable-ties) and a slip lead for your dog.
Where to go
Firstly, you will need to pick up your 'Release Note'. You must get this from the Menzies in the cargo area at Heathrow airport. Their phone number is 020 8750 3000 (option 6) and their address is:
Menzies World Cargo (main reception, ground floor)
557 Shoreham Road West
Hounslow, Middlesex TW6 3RJ
(you can park in the lorry car park just outside)
Picking up your dog
After you have your Release Note you need to go to Heathrow's Animal Reception. This is where you dog will have been looked after after they have landed. They will have been picked up from the airplane by a specialist animal handler and will be let out to toilet, their crate cleaned and they will be fed/watered. The processing of an animal can take up to two hours. You can pick them up once they are ready for release and their micro-chip and passport have been checked.
You need to hand over the Release Note and provide your identification again. Their phone number is 020 8745 7894 and their address is:
Heathrow Animal Reception Centre
(Car parking is free and outside the building)
